Why is my domain owner information made public?

ICANN requires that your name, address, phone number and email address are made public in Whois.

Who is ICANN?

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organization responsible for coordinating the Internet's naming system, and making sure that the network has a stable and secure operation.

What else is visible in Whois?

The Registrar Accreditation Agreement states that the following information should be made public:

  • Registry Domain ID
  • Registrar Abuse Contact Email
  • Registrar Abuse Contact Phone
  • Domain Status
  • Registry Registrant ID
  • Registrant Phone
  • Registrant Phone Ext
  • Registrant Fax
  • Registrant Fax Ext
  • Registrant Email:
  • Registry Admin ID
  • Registry Tech ID
  • DNSSEC
  • Last update of Whois database

How can I get the information removed from whois?

It is not possible to remove the information. You can, however change the registered email address, if you don't want your primary email address made public.

Please note: Providing false registrant information may mean that you risk losing your domain.
